It's not a cross. They're palm frond ashes like I said. They're mixed with a little oil so that they stick. They are applied to the forehead by the priest during communion in the sign of the cross but they aren't cross ashes. Today is the first day of lent. Lent lasts for forty days till Easter Sunday and includes Palm Sunday from which next years ashes will come. And yes it is traditional to give up things you enjoy during lent as a sign of sacrifice. The whole thing revolves around Christs sacrafice for our sins. The fact that he died on the cross. Atonement for our sins. Self introspection. And a reminder that we are mortal and will one day return to dust.
