Random Dump Zone, part.. what? Kajillion?

It's not a cross. They're palm frond ashes like I said. They're mixed with a little oil so that they stick. They are applied to the forehead by the priest during communion in the sign of the cross but they aren't cross ashes. Today is the first day of lent. Lent lasts for forty days till Easter Sunday and includes Palm Sunday from which next years ashes will come. And yes it is traditional to give up things you enjoy during lent as a sign of sacrifice. The whole thing revolves around Christs sacrafice for our sins. The fact that he died on the cross. Atonement for our sins. Self introspection. And a reminder that we are mortal and will one day return to dust.

   Yeah it is. Must be why we have a month of partying beforehand that gets bawdier every day until Fat Tuesday which is the last day of Mardi Gras and happened to be yesterday. :P

Sort of. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. And that's when people give up something they like for 40-something days (til Easter).

You've heard of Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday? It's the day before Ash Wednesday. The purpose behind it is to party and splurge so that you can fast for the next 40 days.

They don't so much offer drawl as a course in the schools where I grew up as just practice it in everyday life so there are no real rules on the spelling.

Yes, I believe in New Yorkish the translation would be "Weren't no one talkin to you ova heeyuh."
