Obscure song help please?

Ok we're lookin for a song from the mid-90s here. The song, I believe, sounded like someone reading a dear-john type letter to someone. The artist was a guy with a british accent, but he sounded quite androgenous. The song definitely had a 3rd person type aspect/feeling to it. Any ideas??

that reminds me, does any one know that one hit that guy had back in 84. it sounded kinda like a bunch of instruments playing together and there was a synth in it. i think the drummer hada mullet in the music video. can any pull the name and artist out their ass for me. thanks...

Ok so some other stuff popped into my head while I was thinkin about this one. It's mostly piano in the background, and the tone is definitely that of a letter being read to someone. Also, I don't believe this particular individual had many, if any, other songs that got any playtime.
