That happens to me too. Bastard scanner.

What I usually do if I am going to scan a sketch is I sketch it, fix it up, shade it, etc. (You know, the usual process) Scan it. Then if the drawing has a lot of shading that doesn't show up, I go back and reshade the whole image.. When you scan it the second time the lighter shading should come up.
