Hurricane season is starting soon.

It's beautiful here.... honestly I'm 21 years old and I've lived here my entire life. *KNOCK ON WODD* In 21 years we have had absolutely $0 in hurricane damage. We've had power, phones, cable go out for extended time after a hurricane, but essentially no damage.

I can't imagine living anywhere else actually. If I had to move it would be to California, but that's about it. Earthquakes vs. Hurricanes :)

Ok I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and all the other Floridians - Melissa. Well I've lived here in Washington my entire life. I can't imagine living anywhere else either. :)

Thanks... yeah I mean I was here during Hurricane Andrew. We live approx 30 mile north of Miami and we had like I said before 0 damage. It really has to hit you just right to cause problems. That said you can't take hurricanes lightly as we have seen what kind of destruction that can cause.

Today is the 26th anniversary of Mount St. Helens blowing up. I was about 2 months old and my parents were driving through it. I survived it! :woo:

Well we've all survived weather disasters. Some just have them more frequently in their neck of the woods. :)

Yeah that sounds about right. You aren't safe from extreme weather anywhere in the country. You just have to know what to do to keep yourself safe if and when it happens. Hurricanes are at least better than Tornadoes... even if they turn last minute you still have some warning.

I try to keep an open mind about people who continue to live in areas that have been DEVASTATED by hurricanes or tornadoes. I understand the 'I've lived here my whole life' and 'nothing's happened to me' explanations but when is too much. At what point do you say, 'This is too much hassle/anxiety/death/money. I have to move.'? If our little mountain blows I would probably move.

It's just that I love the area.... the houses, the architecture, gorgeous cars everywhere, beaches, my Miami Heat, and the rest of the sports team... not much would make me leave. Not just because I've been here my whole life, but more just that I wouldn't pick another place to move too.

Think about it...

The Northwest has tons of rain, the Southwest has incredible heat, the Midwest has tornadoes, the Northeast has extreme cold, California has earthquakes...

In South Florida we have no snow. We do have heat and humidity, but I'd take that over having to "bundle up" I wear shorts and sandals everyday all year long :) . As far as hurricans go I mean it's something you deal with. If you live in the Keys you are probably crazy, but if you're inland a few miles you really aren't in bad shape. It's nothing more than 1-2 days of rain and a little wind (assuming it didn't hit you directly). When you see what happened to a place like New Orleans that isn't something that happens everywhere. Their damage came from the levies giving out and other factors. Otherwise hurricanes can be devastating, but if that's the case you pack up and leave if it's coming for you. Like I said I've been here 21 years though and we haven't had any damage so I mean why leave now in fear.

Tons of rain = depression. True. That's why Hawaii = happy times. Let's just agree that some weather can cause massive damage to some people's homes and lives. And that's a year-round occurrence. Where as our rain or the heat is not so devastating... :) But I would only move if I absolutely had to. Most likely I wouldn't.

And this is where you explain why you continue to live there.....
Cause it's cheap and it's purty and it smells good and old people are the COOLEST. :ok:

Ravi's here too.

And yeah I've been here 27 years and only saw my first hurricane two years ago.. and the worst that happened is some bugs got into my car when they were tryin to avoid the flooded parking lot. Think of it like flying, some people are scared to fly because of all the plane crashes you're always hearing about, but the actual percentage of planes that crash are like, what, .0000003% or some shit.

There were, I believe, 3 trillion hurricanes last season, and not one of them even came ashore here. I don't think. Well Katrina came close but.. so yeah that's where I'm goin with that.

*tipsy*

I'm glad you enjoy the old people and the smelling good. Whenever I think of FL, besides the weather and you, I think of the movie "Bully"....

What, a movie based in Florida? It's like unheard of! No seriously. There've been very few books or movies based here and the stereotypes are so ridiculous that the writers should be shot and fed to gators.
