how do i know i'm watching a godfather movie if i've never seen one?

not that i can see.
it's over now, but it was kind of confusing (granted i didn't see the whole movie).
it seemed to be jumping back and forth through different time periods.
it had a lot of stars in it like al pacino, robert de niro and that guy, i can't remember his name but he's been in a lot of movies (i know his name but my mind has drawn a blank)

i knew that, but i couldn't remember his name, i could picture him in other movies, but nothing.
must be the old age or my brain is too cold.
