Do those things have a purpose? I would think that a car would be more aerodynamic without extra chunks of metal added on.

They hold the rear end down. Cars can actuallly go so fast that they lose grip in a turn so a slight drag isn't going to hurt if it's keeping the car on the road.

The spoiler is light but its design uses lift in the opposite direction to create considerable downforce on the rear of the vehicle enabling said vehicle to keep traction even through a high speed turn. The added weight to create the same downforce would be so substantial that it would cause drastic loss of initial speed and adversely affect fuel efficiency not to mention wreaking havoc with the overall handling of the vehicle.

P.S. With a spoiler you get more downforce the faster you go. Extra weight is there always.
