I always thought pull-ups referred to the classic "military pull ups" in which the arms are spread out a good distance and the palms are facing away from your body.

Chin-ups i usually assoicated with palms in, so that you work your biceps more than your tries and back.

When we were in school they made the guys do theirs palm-in, girls did em palm-out. They told us palm-out were easier, but whatever, I could never do em.
