Sorry, they were lying. I remember when that song first came out and it is about that. Either way it was a fun catchy little tune.

The whole point is the phrase "turning Japanese". What does it mean if not the Britishism toetag was referring to?

Yeah the lyrics don't really make anything clear but if it's a British saying then I'm sure that's what it's about.
