I had a hard time paying much attention the first time through too. In fact had I gone to a theater I'd have considered it a waste of time and money. 
I was the same way with Highlander years ago though and it's one of my favorite movies of all time if that helps at all. Once you get through the complicated plot twists of who is who and who is working for who and who is supposed to be working for who and isn't yada yada yada.
Constantine is no Highlander other than the good vs evil concept but it is pretty good IMHO once you figure it out.
