Hi Folks,

This looks long, but I tried to cram as much detail as I could remember.

There was a commercial about 6-8 years ago that featured several (3?) various people singing (and/or strumming on a ukulele) along with a little ditty. It sounded a bit "folksy" in style.

Anyhow, the ditty went something like this:

"Another sunny day
I lie in bed awake
Just dreaming of your face

Why oh why fly to Kauai
When you could be with me in Waikiki"

The singers sounded like amateurs, and were of varied ages - I think one was a young man in his 20's, and there may have been an elderly couple.

There were a few "cut to" shots to the separate actors/singers, with the singing running continuously, in a charming but somewhat tuneless manner. It was mostly acapella. I think the shots were done outdoors, and rather tight on the actors faces. It seemed to be in a tropical setting.

Tragically, I don't remember the product or service that was being sold!!!

This has tortured me for YEARS! So if you could help me solve this mystery I would be very grateful. And if it is a "real" song, I must find a way to get a copy.

FYI there is a newer 2007 commercial that is a tiny bit similar with an older couple singing together outside, while the man plays an instrument - this is not the one I want. I think that one is by an investment firm.

Thank you!

THIS is all that seems to be out there.

You can go through THESE and see if it's in there. It often helps if someone can see/hear it. It isn't the one called ukulele BTW.

I didn't find any contact info on the Errol Morris page. But I didn't look very hard either.

Good luck.

This one?

Errol Morris directed Citibank commercial from 2001 with a young guy playing a ukulele in the woods and singing a song with the lyrics "why oh why fly to kauai,
when you could be with me in waikiki".

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your help on this. It was also a bit of relief to know someone else was looking for the same tune.

Unfortunately, that darn song was not in any of the commercials posted on that site. The Ukulele one was close - maybe even the same actor - but no dice.

That tune still eludes and tortures me!

Do you have any other suggestions? I'm dying to hear them.

Thanks!

Hi--
This has been going on for many years, people looking for the song.
I'm the guy in the commercial, and the songwriter.
I'm a DJ, and part-time actor, who happens to play ukulele.
Anyway...
I'm in the process of getting the original song available on itunes or song such service.
In the meantime, if you want to hear it (recorded back in 2001), you can go to myspace and give it a listen: http://www.myspace.com/grahamfunke
Thanks everybody...

For the Adtunes search engine:

"Why Oh Why" by DJ Graham Funke

;)

Any help or advice on these lyrics I think I hear:

Why oh why fly to Kuai
When you can be with me in Waikiki?

Leavin' Las Vegas lights
Blew on another man's dice
Love like mine will never come along twice.

I left for the honeymoon
Whistling another man's tune
You know I'll be there soon
To hit 'em like a typhoon.

Why oh why fly to Kuai
When you can be with me in Waikiki?

Why oh why fly to Kuai
When you can be with me in Waikiki?

Grass skirts and tropic dales
Pineapples by the bales
Aloha shirts on sale for us

(not sure about these lines)
Oh no oh sunny days
I lie here mad awake
Just when a honeymoon [something] goes best

Why oh why fly to Kuai
When you can be with me in Waikiki?

Why oh why fly to Kuai
When you can be with me in Waikiki?

Why oh why fly to Kuai
When you can be with me in Waikiki?

Why oh why fly to Kuai
When you can be with me in Waikiki?

Why oh why?
Why oh why?
Why oh why?
Why oh why?

Hawaiian nights
Paradise
Oh Waikiki is the place for me
If you want to go
(not sure about this lines)
to the [something] show
let me know I have room
at the Beachcomber.

Oh happy day, success! SUCCESS!!!!

Thank you for posting this. That tune has been haunting me since I heard it the first time. It got a hold on my brain 7 years ago, and I have been trying to find it ever since. Thank you!!!!

I would love to download it, but see that it's not enabled on your myspace page. Will that change? Will you also have the acoustic version?

I figured, why not ask?! I had nearly lost hope of finding anything, so now I'm mad with optimism.

Thanks!

There never was an acoustic version. The commercial was just me playing uke and singing live.
I finally found a copy of the commercial and put it on my myspace page:
