I'm sorry that this is in the wrong forum but I'm not sure where else to put it.

Anyway, I'm wondering if there's a website that can find songs you're looking for based on a sample. So, for example, you'd either play it and let the website listen to it or upload it and let the website analyze it (or something like that). Does anyone know if the kind of thing I'm looking for exists?

This site is kind of what your looking for.

I know that some cell phone carriers offer a service where you play a song and it will identify it for you for a per song fee. But the program is only as good as the songs in the database. It would be sweet if itunes took their whole song database and made a program doing what you are asking for.

the cell phone thing works but i dont have to pay for it.

i have verizon and its called VCast SongID.....i had to add the application from my Get It Now menu but to ID a song is free...it just costs if you want to purchase the song or ringtone (if available).

for the most part it works but it wont pick up EVERY song thats out there.

I guess a round about way could be to try and upload it as a video onto microsoft's video website: http://www.video.msn.com/
They run all submitted videos through some kind of program so that people can't upload copyrighted songs. I haven't played around with it much, so I don't know how well it works, but from personal experience, I know it can recognize Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah".
Cheers!

Oh, and what do you mean by "analyze it"? Do you mean:
a) Figure out what song it is, or
B) Try to find similar songs?

I understood it as (a), but if you already know a song title and want to find similar songs based on the make-up of the song, you can try pandora.com
