Does anybody know why some people pluralize the word "Math" into "Maths"?

It has been ticking me off ever since I read "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time"...

It's the way they simplify the word "mathematics" in Britain. Just how we, instead, use "math."

And since that particular book you're reading is about a boy in the UK, well...

Heh that's when I first noticed it too. It's a European thing. Possibly also Canadian and Australian. As usual, we just gotta be different from the rest of the world.

heh heh.

i am a fan of the "ou" in their words as well.

edit: for frosting color

or heres another one: judgement vs. judgment
or superstitious vs superstituous

hmm... i kinda understand that... but why is there no "s" in our shortened version of mathematics... the subject itself is "Mathematics"... not "Mathematic"

And we sure as hell don't say "lift" instead of elevator.
