The new "words will fail you" ad for the soon-to-open Aria Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas just came out and it features a solo piano work that struck my fancy. I've tried checking the hotel's website and some other places but can't find anything to go on. Does anyone know if the piece is published or just written for the ad? If it helps, I'm pretty sure the commercial was put out by MGM/Mirage.

Here's the youtube link:

I think the piano solo is Winter Ride by Kostia. The CD that has this piece in it is Suite St. Petersburg A Piano Portrait.

Okay, my question back is...Did you want to know the name of the piece in order to find the CD and listen to it or because you are a pianist and want to play it? If you are a pianist, as I am, good luck in finding the sheet music for it. If you find the sheet music, please respond back so I can play it as well. Thanks, Wabie

I suggest listening to Winter Ride and the commercial again and comparing. I know for a fact that the piece was performed by Kostia because I called Aria in Las Vegas and asked what the piece was because I would like to play it on piano. They were only able to tell me the performer's name, which is Kostia, or Konstantin Efimov.

If you agree, tell me how to get the sheet music for this piece. I would love to play it.

I saw the commercial and went looking for info. And here it is! Wow!

You may want to do the same. I listened to Winter Ride, and then the commercial, but they're not even remotely similar. How in the world did you make this correlation? I assume you work for the resort, or someone involved. No offense, but that's quite a stretch, and it's hard to understand how you could draw that connection.

Anyway, even if it's the same guy, it's not Winter Ride, not even a derivative, and it's not any piece from that album. I haven't listened to the Mendelssohn composition yet - maybe that was the inspiration as someone else suggested.

Great commercial!

It's not Mendelssohn either. Again, not really similar at any point. I just listened to the entire piece, then the YouTube video straight away.

Judging by the tight integration with the commercial, I think it's safe to assume that the piece was composed specifically for that ad.

Which, unfortunately, means that the sheet music probably won't be available. The good news is that it can be learned (to an extent) without a terrible amount of struggle. I sat at the piano after seeing the ad and could stumble through some sections rather quickly. It wasn't perfect, but with a laptop on the stand and the commercial looping I bet it could be tackled.

Thank you all for responding. Unfortunately, it's not Kostia's "Winter Ride" OR Mendelssohn. The Kostia piece is the closest in terms of style, but there aren't any other similar works on any of his albums that I've looked through.

I agree with the poster who believes the piece was written as incidental music for the commercial. If this is the case, then the music will never be released publicly because of contract and copyright agreements. Never fear, though, for as we all have discovered there is much more music out there in the world in the same vein for us to enjoy and perform.

Wabie is right! This music was composed and performed by Russian composer and pianist Kostia specifically for this commercial (you can call Aria resort to confirm that, if you are interested). He is Narada Recording Artist and also works with Genesis and Phil Collins guitar player Daryl Stuermer (BTW, there are tons of videos on youtube you may check out!). You can find his albums on Amazon.com, iTunes, CDBaby etc.. There are some postings on youtube with his music. Here are couple:

He also composed and performed music for "Home Depot" 2004 Olympic commercial. Check it out!

A commissioned Kostia piece seems right.

For those of us that can't play by ear, does anyone mind posting the chord progression? It sounds like tremolo octives (or perhaps chords) that modulate a couple of times thoughout the piece, with much of the effect dependent on dynamics and phrasing.

Very minimalist and appealing, especially coming from Kostia (who can be a bit overwrought at times)....

my source tells me the music was created by Earhole music in Chicago. Perhaps they re-recorded a version of the piece of music some of you think it is but you could call them and find out easily. good luck.

i just heard it for the first time and thought is was pretty cool. I spent about 3 minutes at the keyboard and could probably write it out. But the composer was just messing around with an F maj 7 chord. Infact the first melody is the 1st, 3rd,maj7th,5th,2nd,3rd ( or something like that). Again i just messed with it, but it seems to me like the harmonic movement is based on the Fmaj7 going to Gmaj. if you want to hear what I mean, play an a min chord then a g major chord. he is just messing around with the minor triad built on the third of the tonic and the major chord of the second (Gmaj chord). I cant tell if it is 2, 3 or four hands. if it is 2, I dont have the mechanical ability to perform it, but it shouldnt be that hard to arrange for 2 hands. I like it though

I thought, it's F#minor ... But there are bunch of other chords as well - like D major, G major, B minor and B major etc. Where in the track you hear F major??

BUT I WANT THIS PIECE!!!! And there have been plenty of prices for commercials that have been published, books of them even.

Stunningly beautiful piece however short. It remind's me of some of my compositions when I was still in the earthly realm. :)

gsfuccillo I would pay you to write it out for me (for my private use only, so there is no copyright violation) ... I would love to play it ... I'm a great classical pianist but have no training at writing things out by ear
