I've been searching Kaaza for all the versions of "Leaving On A Jet Plane" that I can find, but none of them are the same band that sings it for the opening of A&E's show Airplane. They sound like Counting Crowes, but they've never covered it as far as I can tell. I've even tried writing A&E and Southwest with no response. You're my last resort. Anybody have any ideas????

"Leaving On a Jet Plane" was covered by Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, Jewel,
Chantal Kreviazuk, Sister Hazel, Robbie Fulks, Jan Arden, Eve 6, Bobby Bare, Liz Phair, Drivin N Cryin, Funeral Dress, Slightly Stoopid, and Operation: Cliff Clavin.

I found it listed as a John Denver song but first heard it done by Peter Paul & Mary waaayyyyyy back in the day. *shrugs*

JCA commented that the theme sounds like Tom Petty... kind of got his voice, but I don't think it's him.

Did Dylan ever do that song? Tom Petty sounds a bit like him to me sometimes and the covers project, though good, doesn't always find all the covers. It's kind of hard not to know Dylan when you hear him though.

i don't think it's dylan... upbeat sounding, hint of petty on a really good singing day... :)

by the way, late night or early bird?

<--- can't sleep... :(

Oyly Boyd  I was wondering what you were doing here this time of the morning. :p

From TV Guide Televisionary, March 2, 2004:
Televisionary: Well, if Google could dial a phone and ask an A&E publicist, it could probably write this column, too. But it can't, so I remain employed.

The version you enjoy so was recorded by singer Jimmy Coup and studio musicians Steven Miller and John Fields specifically for the show. Coup tells me it'll soon be available for purchase, but he doesn't have details on that right now. However, if you'd like to check for updates on that (and sample some of Coup's original music), stop by his site.

Yes, I am responding to a rather old topic, but recently I had been searching for this, and that is when I found this forum. Does anyone know if this is as of yet available anywhere? It seems most still do not even know who performs it, but for those that do, the song itself is still out of reach...

Brandon: Did you try contacting Jimmy Coup via his website, as mentioned above?

Hi all, check out this e-mail I received from Jimmy Coup. Should answer a lot of questions everyone has surrounding the original Airline theme song.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hello to all the kind people who wrote to me about the Airline theme
song. The response to this song has blown my mind. I have been
"rocking" all of my life and have never received the kind of response
i've received for this one 25 sec spot on a TV show. I am very
thankful, and fell quite blessed to have been involved and cant express
to you how much you praise of this song has help my spirit. And the
fact that so many people took the time to find me on the web makes me
want to cry.

I have a friend who was a "on site" producer for the show, which means
she was at the airport getting people to agree to be on camera and
such, and her boyfriend is a world class record producer and when they
heard the show as looking for music, he decided to give it a go. There
were other people he had in mind for the singing of the song and at the
last minute around , he asked me to try it also. I had recently got a
new Apple computer and was learning to record at home. That night I
went to the store and bought a new mic and stayed up most of the night
recording the vocal track you hear now on the show. I did it in the
garage! I was so happy to get a shot at doing this kind of work i gave
it my all. I must say, I felt i BIG vibe of goodness all around me when
i was doing it, i was trying hard and hoping and praying they would
choose me (some of the other singers were well known pros). And i
did!!! I was so happy, my mother was beside herself and every time it
came on TV we turned it up and danced. Happy Day!!

We tried to get the job for the 2nd season, the producer guys worked
and re worked and re worked the song for the TV show producers but in
the end (the 11th hour actually) the TV show producers decided to not
use us again.....ughhhhhhh!! I was so broke and really hoping for more
good fortune! But no....

So, what i am doing here is completely illegal, but i am a big fan and
proponent of giving the people what they want.....so here are some of
the versions of Airline theme that i have. Also included are the
versions the TV show producers passed on. I compiled this for a
commercial house here in LA to get me more work (that has not happened
yet) but still hoping. Please understand i do not own these songs (and
therefor is not mine to give away)but I am giving them to you all as
my "friends" to listen to for your own enjoyment. I am sorry they are
not complete songs and may not be all that pleasurable to listen to but
its the best i can do for now. Again Thank you for taking the time to
find me out, and if i can i will still try to convince my record
producer buddy to help me make a longer version for all of you, which i
will gladly give away again! thank you all very much.

All the best.

Sincerely, Jimmy Coup"

Does anyone know who sing the version of "Leaving On A Jet Plane" For the A&E show Airline????

it's driving me crazy, i heard the song was produced just for the show but i want to listen to this song more than anything...it's called "Closer to You (37,000 Feet)," and was composed by Mike Palmer...anyone got any more info on this, lyrics, where i can listen to this song, etc. thanks
