 Over the Hill
If the song in a new TV commercial for Cingular's "Family Talk" cellphone plan sounds familiar, it might be that you've heard it in an ad before. Backed by the Peter Gabriel tune known as "Solsbury Hill" (via iTunes), the Cingular ad features scenes of families standing in for the cellphone provider's "more bars" logo.

Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill" seems to be a go-to song for inoffensive feel-goodness, having appeared in several ads and soundtracks, including: Grey's Anatomy, Vanilla Sky, In Good Company, Witchblade, and Big Fish.

Doubt the "life changing moments" musical aura created by the use of "Solsbury Hill"? The track used in a movie trailer can even turn the horror movie thriller The Shining into a comedy.

 TV Commercial Music Podcast
One of our favorite podcasts is Coverville, which is an audio show featuring nothing but cover songs. Produced three times a week, the podcast is a wonderful source of "rare, unusual and great cover songs" and is a must-listen for any music fan.

Since many commercials use cover songs, we contacted Brian Ibbott (who produces and hosts Coverville) about an idea of doing a theme show featuring TV ad music. He was very gracious and used our song suggestions in his latest March 9th show: Coverville 187: Cover songs from Television Commercials (subscribe via iTunes). The podcast includes songs by Rufus Wainwright, Chantal Kreviazuk, and the Muppets.

One of the more interesting aspects of Coverville is that it is one of the few audio podcasts that has attempted to navigate the potential mine-field of playing licensed music in a podcast. Kudos to Brian for working with the music industry to make this great music (legally) available for downloading as part of his show.
