In a series of ads for VH1's Hip Hop Honors are black and white images focusing on different items. One ad shows a turntable and features the song "It's Just Begun" by Jimmy Castor Bunch. The tagline reads: "You see a turntable. They saw a band." In another ad, featuring a boombox, the song "Apache" by the Incredible Bongo Band is heard. (Although, that version of the song isn't available on albums in the US, a Fatboy Slim remix of the song samples from that version and sounds very similar to what is heard in the ad.) The tagline for that ad reads: "You see a boombox. They saw a block party." Both commercials end with the line: "You see a mic. They saw respect."

The instrumental song, "Apache," was originally recorded in the 60s by a UK group called The Shadows, but has since been covered by a wide range of artists including a popular US cover was done by the Danish jazz guitarist named Jorgen Ingmann. A notable version was by the hip hop legends The Sugar Hill Gang in the late 70s.

The Hip Hop Honors awards show, set to air in October, will celebrate hip hop's 30th anniversary. The show will feature the hip hop artists that broke ground with their new style, and will honor artists like Run DMC, Tupac Shakur and Public Enemy, with performances by the Beastie Boys, Sugar Hill Gang and more.
