 Like Steve McQueen
In a new commercial for Wrangler Jeans, NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. helps launch the "New Generation of Wrangler". In the TV spot, Earnhardt and the No. 8 race team are seen at various stages of a NASCAR race, paired with images of Dale Jr. sporting the "new fits" and "new styles" of Wrangler blue jeans. The song backing the race in the TV ad is "Steve McQueen" by Sheryl Crow. This marks the second pairing of Earnhardt, Crow, and McQueen -- Dale Jr. also appears in the song's music video (Real Video Stream), helping Crow pay homage to famous action scenes from Steve McQueen films, including McQueen's iconic Ford Mustang car chase from his film Bullitt.

 Levi's On My Mind
Levi's creative new TV ads for their Original 501 and Loose Straight 569 jeans showcase a determined boyfriend and a stalking mannequin. In "Walk" a boyfriend shows up at his girlfriend's door with flowers. She puts them in a vase as he slips past her, reaches out the window for his jeans caught in a tree, retrieves them and leaves. In "Mannequin" a male admires and removes the jeans modeled by the mannequin in a store window. The exposed mannequin continues to appear in the same places as the man, overlooking him as he wears his jeans. You can view both commercials at Levi's website. The "Walk" ad uses "Always on my Mind" by Willie Nelson and "Mannequin" uses "You Put A Spell on Me" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

 VH1 Loves the 90s
The 90s may be long gone, but that won't stop VH1 from producing yet another "talking heads" nostalgia show about it. For the past week "I Love the 90s" has recapped the good, the bad and the ugly pop culture moments from the decade, complete with series regulars Michael Ian Black and Hal Sparks. The third installment follows the huge success of "I Love the 70s," "I Love the 80s" and "I Love the 80s Strike Back." To tie in with each decade VH1 has also compiled three retrospective CD collections full of songs including Sugar Hill Gang's historic "Rapper's Delight," the B-52's quirky "Love Shack" and Hanson's bouncy "Mmmbop."

 "My World" by Samsung
Currently airing in the US are two different versions of an ad, called "My World," for Samsung's VM-A680 video phone. The ad follows a day in the life of a young girl and ends with the tag line: "This is a movie about my life. Made by me." You can watch the ad here. (click "see movies" then "see the trailer")

In the first version of the ad, the following songs are heard: As the girl is driving around town with her friends: "Living in America" by the Sounds. After eating lunch and forgetting her phone, a male returns it to her and they exchange numbers: "Dice" by Finley Quaye. The girl and guy find themselves on a rooftop and kiss: "Californie" by Air.

A second, shorter version of the ad uses one song called "What Are You Afraid Of" by West Indian Girl. Their debut album, which will include this song, is due to release in August 2004.

An older global ad for Samsung called "Portraits," starring Estella Warren, shows a girl who takes a man's camera phone away from him and starts taking pictures of herself as she lays across a car. The song used for the ad is called "Mi Corazón" by Campo.

Game Boy Advances in the Forums
The Game Boy Advance ad campaign continues with two new TV spots: Mario Golf Advance Tour and the Classic NES Limited Edition Game Boy SP. Following the "Peek Inside" ad theme from this spring, the current ads depict a gamer standing in the middle of an intersection playing his GBA as graphics swirl around him. The retro NES console ad is backed by a well placed new wave song called "Situation" by the group Yaz. The ad for Mario Golf uses a remixed version of the song "Good Dancers" by Sleepy Jackson called the "Good Dancers (Gerling Remix)."

The Mario Golf ad song identification is a great example of how effective the Adtunes.com Forums can be. Several days of guessing can sometimes find correct answers, but in this case it takes the ear of one member recognizing an otherwise obscure sample from a remixed song. So, thanks (again!) to the Forums.
